Epic has launched a Fortnite tease that is tweaking Apple’s nose about new rules set to come into force in the EU. The brief clip shows Peely, the Fortnite banana mascot, floating backwards into the void while making the “I’m watching you” gesture with two fingers. It adds a shoutout to the EU’s new Digital Markets Act (DMA) and adds “Apple, the world is watching.”

This is the latest stage in a global faceoff between Apple and Epic as the Fortnite developer (and platform holder) battles to open up the walled garden that is iOS. Geoffrey Hinton, known colloquially as the “Godfather of Deep Learning,” spent the past decade working on artificial intelligence development at Google. But in an interview with The New York Times, Hinton announced that he has resigned from his position, and said he’s worried about the rate of AI development and its potential for harm.

Hinton is one of the foremost researchers in the field of AI development. The Royal Society, to which he was elected as a Fellow in 1998, describes him as “distinguished for his work on artificial neural nets, especially how they can be designed to learn without the aid of a human teacher,” and said that his work “may well be the start of autonomous intelligent brain-like machines.”

Look, I’m aware that the phrase “indie RPG set in early modern Hungary” sounds almost excruciatingly arch and high-falutin’, but for your own sake, don’t touch that dial⁠—Felvidek has the juice. I was already excited for this singular-looking JRPG-style project, but after making my way through its ~45-minute demo, I’m here to say it’s a must-play.

Kevin Mitnick, one of the most famous computer hackers in the world and the subject of an over two-year manhunt in the 1990s, died of complications from pancreatic cancer last Sunday, aged 59. His death has been confirmed to the New York Times.

Mitnick is a legendary figure, one of those people whose life story reads like an elaborate work of fiction. After getting his start with a punch card machine that let him get free bus rides at age 12, he graduated to phone phreaking and hacking as he got older, breaking into networks owned by corporations like the Digital Equipment Corporation. The police weren’t too keen on that, and he was sentenced to a year in prison and three years of supervised release in 1988.

My biggest gripe with current PCs is excessive power consumption. Second to that is the heat generated by NVMe SSDs. A motherboard with an acre of metal covering half the board, or SSDs cooled by tower heatsinks with tiny fans is just not what I want to see. It’s not like Gen 5 x4 SSDs deliver tangible performance improvements anyway.
